Tanecka Carey to Participate in FIBA Americas Centrobasket Championship
June 8, 2012
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss senior women's basketball player Tanecka Carey will play with the U.S. Virgin Islands National Team next week during the FIBA Americas Centrobasket Championships, June 12-16 in Morovis, Puerto Rico.
"I am thrilled for the opportunity to play for the Virgin Islands National Team," said Carey. "My father, Elroy Carey, was born in the Virgin Islands and came to the United States in high school. He starred at Piney Woods and Mississippi Valley State University. He was a major factor in me becoming a basketball player and continues to challenge me today. It is an honor and a tribute to my father to play for his country's National Team. I believe the international experience will help me in preparation for the 2012-13 Lady Eagle basketball season."
The tournament begins on Tuesday, June 12, with the U.S. Virgin Islands squad taking on the Dominican Republic. Each team will play three preliminary round games before advancing to the quarterfinals.
"We are excited for this opportunity for Tanecka," said Southern Miss head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "She will gain valuable experience by competing against the best players in Central America while making a tribute to her dad and his native country. We believe this will be a jump start for Tanecka as she has her personal goals set for the 2012-13 year."
Carey was a Second Team All-Conference USA member while being named the C-USA Newcomer of the Year. She was fifth in the league in scoring (15.1 pts) and three-point field goal percentage (32.2%) while leading the league in three-pointers made (2.2). She was second in minutes played (37.1), 10th in free throw percentage (.708) and 16th in rebounding (5.9).
The 5-9 guard also led the team with 26 double-figure scoring games and recorded three double-doubles.
