Women's Basketball Inks JUCO All-American

May 10, 2013

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss women's basketball coach Joye Lee-McNelis announce the signing of Tamara Jones of Prosser, Wash., to a national letter of intent and grant-in-aid scholarship for the 2013-14 academic year.

Jones, a 5-11 forward, was a starter and two-year letterwinner at Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kan., where she averaged a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds for Coach Alaura Sharp. She received WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) All-American honors as well as first team NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) All-American honors. She was recently named the school's Broncbuster Athlete of the Year. Her junior college jersey will be displayed in the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame's Ring of Honor for one year.

"We are delighted to have Tamara join our Lady Eagle family," McNelis said. "She adds a finishing touch to a class that we expect to be difference makers for our program. She possesses a keen ability to score and rebound the basketball in the power forward position. With her averaging a double-double at Garden City, we felt she would be the key ingredient in making this class a success. She has worked extremely hard to become the best in all of junior college. She is of high character and is self-motivated to become a better player every day."

Jones earned first team All-KJCCC West team and All-Region VI honors and named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference West Player of the Year. She became the all-time leading scorer with 1,183 points while helping her team to a 29-4 record, a second-place finish in the Jayhawk West and breaking nine school records including the most wins in a regular season and undefeated at home. She was named the conference Player of the Week six times during the season out of 15 and two NJCAA National Player of the Week.

"It has been awesome coaching Tamara for the last two seasons," Sharp said. "She has great abilities as a basketball player, but is an even better person. She has made me a better coach and a better person. I look forward to her future and am very proud and grateful for what she has done for our program here at Garden City."

As a freshman, Jones averaged 16 points and nine rebounds per game while earning Freshman of the Year in the conference and receiving All-Region VI team honors. She earned conference Player of the Week three times and one NJCAA National Player of the Week.

"I believe that Southern Miss is the best fit for me and I am excited to try something new," Jones said.
