Women's Basketball Gets Addition for 2013-14

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss women's coach Joye Lee-McNelis announce the signing of Markia Nix of Moss Point, Miss., to a national letter of intent and grant-in-aid scholarship for the 2013-14 academic year.

Nix, a 5-10, guard/forward, was a two-year letterwinner at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College where she played for Melanie Stone. Nix averaged 13.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore to go with 2.6 assists. She earned MACJC first team all-state and all-Region 23 honors. She was a MACJC all-star participant while receiving the MGCCC rebounding award.

"I am ecstatic about becoming a Lady Eagle," Nix said. "I feel that USM is the best fit for me both academically and athletically. I am humbled by the opportunity to be a part of the Lady Eagle Basketball Program and I look forward to getting the ball rolling."

As a freshman, Nix averaged 7.5 points and 5.6 rebounds. She prepped at Moss Point High School where she was a three-year letter winner.

"We are very proud of Markia and all that she has accomplished with MGCCC in the past two years," said Stone. "We feel that USM is the best choice for Markia because it is close to home and she feels it is the best fit for her. She is an outstanding student-athlete and we know she will be a great asset to USM and the Lady Eagle Basketball Program."

Nix joins fall signees Lashyra Cotton, 5-11, Forward, Cleveland, Miss. (East Side HS), Alex Coyne, 5-5, PG, Lake Placid, Fla. (Lake Placid HS), Brittanny Dinkins, 5-7, G, Miami, Fla. (Norland HS), Ashley Folsom, 6-3, F, Deltona, Fla., (Father Lopez HS), Kierra Jordan, 6-0, Forward, Jackson, Miss. (Lanier HS) and Voche' Martin, 6-3, F, Desoto, Texas (Paris Junior College/Houston).
