Women's Basketball Falls at Mississippi State, 71-61
Junior Tamara Jones and sophomore Jerontay Clemons combined for 44 points, but it was enough as Southern Miss fell to Mississippi State 71-61 Saturday night.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's basketball team readies for the second round of the WNIT when the Lady Eagles travel to Starkville, Miss., to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Monday at 7 p.m.

Southern Miss Preview
The Lady Eagles (27-6) are coming off a 75-60 win over Lamar in the first round. Freshman Brittanny Dinkins led the way for Southern Miss with 17 points while senior Jamierra Faulkner posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 assists. Tamara Jones added 14 points and Markia Nix chipped in 10. Kierra Jordan pulled down a team-best eight rebounds. The Lady Eagles finished the game shooting 56.9 percent from the field.
Faulkner continues to lead the team in scoring and assists, averaging 17.6 points and 8.6 assists per game. Jones is next at 14.5 points and a team-best 6.0 rebounds per game while Clemons is averaging 11.2 points.
The Lady Eagles are averaging 78.5 points and 39.4 rebounds per game while shooting 47.0 percent from the field and 68.2 percent from the line.
Scouting Mississippi State
Mississippi State (20-13) is coming off 77-68 win over Tulane in the first round of the WNIT. Martha Alwal and Savannah Carter led State with 15 points each while Breanna Richard and Dominique Dillingham added 13 and 11 points, respectively. Kendra Grant chipped in 10 points. Richardson also pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds.
Alwal leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 15.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per game while Grant next at 11.1 points. The Bulldogs are averaging 71.5 points and 38.7 rebounds per game while shooting 40.3 percent from the field and 71.5 percent from the line.
Coach Vic Schaefer is in his second season at Mississippi State as head coach.
Series Record: Southern Miss vs. Mississippi State
This is the 41st meeting between the two teams dating back to the 1975-76 season ... Southern Miss leads the overall series 22-18 ... Southern Miss snapped a four-game losing streak last season ... Mississippi State won an earlier meeting between the two schools in Starkville.
The winner tonight's game will play the winner Auburn/Old Dominion.
