Lady Eagles Enter 2012 Conference USA Championship as the No. 9 Seed

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss will bring a No. 9 seed into the postseason league tournament after finishing the season with a 6-10 C-USA record. The Lady Eagles will face No. 8 seed UCF at 5 p.m. in Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
The Lady Eagles are making their 16th appearance in the 17-year history of the event and have posted a 9-15 record overall. This is the third time in the tournament that Southern Miss and UCF will face each other. The winner will play No. 1 UTEP on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Southern Miss Preview
Southern Miss is 12-17 overall and 6-10 in the league after a 70-57 loss at East Carolina on Mar. 3. Jamierra Faulkner paced the team with a game-high 22 points with Tanecka Carey chipping 16. Sedreka Plummer scored 10 points off the bench. Faulkner was the top rebounder with nine boards to go with six assists and six steals.
Faulkner leads the team in scoring with a 16.7 point per game average with Tanecka Carey next at 15.2 points. Carey leads the team in rebounding with 5.9 rebounds per game while Nitesha Pierce is next with a 5.8 per game average. As a team, USM is shooting 40.6 percent from the field and 62.8 percent from the line while averaging 60.4 points and 37.4 rebounds per outing.
UCF is coming off a 69-60 loss to Marshall on Mar. 1 to close out the regular season. The Knights ended the regular season with a 12-16 overall record and 7-9 in league play. Aisha Patrick posted a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead UCF. Kayli Keough added 12 points and Andrea Hines chipped in 11.
Patrick is averaging in double figures with 14.2 points per game while Gevenia Carter is next at 11.9 and Keough chips in 10.1 points per outing. Erika Jones is the top rebounder as she is averaging 9.4 rebounds per outing and Patrick also adds 9.0 rebounds per game. As a team, the Knights' offense is averaging 55.4 points per game while shooting 36.3 percent from the field and 64.2 percent from the line. UCF is averaging 40.8 rebounds per contest. Coach Joi Williams is in her fifth season at UCF.
Series Notes: Southern Miss vs. UCF
This will be the 22nd meeting between the two teams dating back to 1980. Southern Miss leads the overall series 13-8 against UCF. The Lady Eagles won the first 12 meetings between the two teams. UCF has won the last seven meetings and swept the Lady Eagles during the regular season. The last time the two teams played each other in the tournament was in the championship game in 2009. UCF defeated Southern Miss in overtime, 65-54.
