HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss junior point guard Jamierra Faulkner was named one of three finalists for the 2013 C Spire Gillom Trophy, awarded annually to the most outstanding women's senior college basketball player in Mississippi.
Faulkner joins Martha Alwal of Mississippi State and Valencia McFarland of Ole Miss as the other finalists. Faulkner is only the second players to be named to the finalist joining Pauline Love in 2009 and 2010.
Faulkner leads Southern Miss is scoring (18.7 ppg), assists (6.6 apg) and steals (3.4 spg) while ranking third overall in Conference USA scoring and first in assists and steals as well. She is the only player in C-USA to rank among the NCAA Top 50 in four different categories, 34th in scoring, 10th in assists, 11 in steals per game and third in triple doubles. Faulkner is the only player in C-USA to record a triple double this season. She was named Conference USA Player of the Week two times this season.
Faulkner recently became the school's all-time leader in assists, totaling 573 in just three seasons. She currently ranks 11th all-time in scoring with 1,389 points and sixth in steals with 254. She accounts for approximately 33 of USM's 62 points per game.
The Gillom Trophy is named for Peggie Gillom, an All-American at Ole Miss and then a coach at the collegiate, professional and Olympic levels.
The winner of the 2013 Gillom Trophy will be announced Monday, March 11, 2013, in luncheon ceremonies at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in Jackson beginning at 11:30 am. Van Chancellor, another international basketball hall of famer, will be the keynote speaker.
