Southern Miss Eyes Sweep of UTEP
Lady Eagles are 7-5 in C-USA play
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss Women's basketball team (15-9, 7-5) will face the Miners of UTEP (6-17, 3-8) on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
The Lady Eagles, led by Senior Brittanny Dinkins', then career-high 29 points, defeated UTEP 79-68 in the last meeting. It was the second time in three years that the Lady Eagles have swept the UTEP/UTSA road trip and the third win in El Paso in the last four trips. Freshman Shonte Hailes collected her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Head coach Joye Lee-McNelis acknowledged the success the Lady Eagles had last time they saw the Miners, but that UTEP has improved since.
"Their star in the making is Katrina Zec," McNelis said. "She was injured and has made a great comeback. She is truly a difference maker for them as a player. Tamara Seda, their post player, is averaging close to 10 rebounds a game and is a beast inside. She had her way with us at their place. She scored at will and we tried all different ways to guard her. She's strong, has a soft touch and has great hands."
UTEP is ranked second in C-USA for total rebounds and third offensive rebound and blocked shots. Seda is the second leading rebounder in the conference for total rebounds and third for offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds and blocked shots.
Lady Eagle fans can hear Josh West on the radio broadcast for the game on WFOR 1400 AM at 3:30 p.m. CT.
