Southern Miss Opens February Home Stretch with UTSA
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Women’s basketball team (14-9, 6-5) will face the Roadrunners of UTSA (11-10, 7-3) on Thursday evening at 6 p.m.
The Lady Eagles beat the Roadrunners earlier in the season 69-68 and are one of only three teams to beat UTSA in Conference USA play.
“We have to do a better job on our defensive conversion [if we want to beat them again,” said assistant head coach Kiley Hill. “We have to find them in transition quickly. They shoot the ball so well. We also have to do a good job on the offensive boards. Those two things are very controllable. If we don’t control them then we let them play into what they do so well, space the floor. You have to be able to counter those.”
Jayla King’s career-high 18 rebounds were crucial to the victory in San Antonio, Texas.
“Our mantra has been that the first shot won’t beat you, but the second one will,” Hill said. “Our focus is to not allow them to get second and third opportunities, high percentage shot buckets. We got to make them take contested, tough shots. Offensively, we have to be the aggressor, we have to be in position to go to the glass and get second chance opportunities.”
King wasn’t the only one who shined in the Lone Star State. Brittanny Dinkins collected 16 points to start her current 10 game streak of 16 or more points and Shonte Hailes had her third straight game with double-digit scoring that would lead to her C-USA Freshman of the Week award
Lady Eagle fans can hear Josh West on the radio broadcast for the game on WFOR 1400 AM at 5:30 p.m. CT.
