Southern Miss Falls To Charlotte, 72-53
Tanesha Washington scored a career-high 27 points but it wasn't enough as Southern Miss falls to Charlotte, 72-53, Saturday afternoon.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's basketball team hits the road for a Conference USA matchup against Charlotte on Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. central time. The game will be televised locally in Charlotte by WCCB-TV.

Southern Miss Preview
The Lady Eagles (16-5, 5-3) are coming off a 68-56 upset win over No. 21 Middle Tennessee. Sophomore Jerontay Clemons recorded her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Tamara Jones had 15 points and nine rebounds while Voche' Martin and Kierra Jordan added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Jamierra Faulkner dished out 11 assists.
Faulkner currently leads the team in scoring and assists, averaging 16.0 points and 8.5 assists per game. Jones is next at 14.0 points and a team-best 6.3 rebounds per game while Clemons is averaging 11.6 points.
The Lady Eagles are averaging 77.9 points and 40.2 rebounds per game while shooting 46.0 percent from the field and 66.0 percent from the line.
Charlotte (10-10, 4-3) is coming off a 72-62 loss at East Carolina on Feb. 1. Kira Gordon and Lefty Webster led the team with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Ayanna Holmes and Webster pulled down eight rebounds each.
Charlotte returns seven letterwinners including two starters from last season's team that finished 22-10.
The 49ers use a balanced scoring attack as four players are averaging in double figures. Ny Hammonds and Gabby Tyler lead the group averaging 11.9 points apiece while Gordon is next at 11.4 and Hillary Sigmon chips in 10.3 points per game. Tyler also leads the team in rebounding with 7.4 rebounds per game. As a team, Charlotte is averaging 69.4 points and 40.2 rebounds per game while shooting 40.8 percent from the field and 71.7 percent from the line.
Coach Cara Consuegra is in her third season at Charlotte as head coach.
Series Notes: Southern Miss vs. Charlotte
This is the 22nd meeting between the two teams dating back to the 1985-86 season ... Southern Miss leads the overall series at 17-4. The first time the two teams met was Nov. 29, 1985 with the Lady Eagles winning that contest. Southern Miss won the first 17 meetings between the teams, but Charlotte has won the last four meetings.
Following the Charlotte game, Southern Miss returns home to start a two-game homestand with a matchup against Marshall on Feb. 12. The game has been designated the "Pink Game" with a tip time set for 7 p.m.
