Women's Basketball Hosts Rice

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's basketball team returns home to host Rice in Conference USA action on Sunday. Tip time is set for 2 p.m.

Rice Knocks Off Southern Miss 72-43 in Women's Basketball Action
The Southern Miss women's basketball team scored the lowest point total of the season as Rice knocked off the Lady Eagle, 72-43, in Conference USA action Sunday afternoon.
Southern Miss (10-8, 2-3) is coming off an 81-70 loss at Houston on Thursday. Five players tallied double figure scoring led by Tanecka Carey led the way with a game-high 19 points followed by Jamierra Faulkner with 16, Jerontay Clemons, Ance Celmina and Tiarra Pollnitz scored 10 points apiece. Nitesha Pierce grabbed a team-best nine rebounds.
Faulkner, Carey and Clemons continue to pace the Lady Eagles in scoring. Faulkner is tops at 17.2 points with Carey next at 16.0 and Clemons at 10.4 points. Clemons also paces the team in rebounds, averaging 6.6 per game.
Southern Miss is averaging 63.3 points and 39.6 rebounds while shooting 39.3 percent from the field and 62.9 percent from the line. The Lady Eagle defense allows 63.1 points on 38.9 percent shooting from the field. The team is forcing its opponents into 20.9 turnovers per game while coming up with 10.4 steals per game.
Rice brings a 9-9 overall record and 1-4 in league play following a 49-48 loss to UTEP on Thursday. Jessica Kuster led Rice with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Kuster leads the team in scoring with 16.6 points per game while Megan Palmer is next at 10.9. Kuster also paces the team in rebounding with 10.2 boards per game.
The Owls are averaging 57.0 points and 45.2 rebounds per game while shooting 35.9 percent from the field and 64.8 percent from the line.
Southern Miss vs. Rice Series:
This is the eighth meeting between the two teams. Rice leads the overall series 5-2 that dates back to 2005-06 season. Rice won the first two meetings between the teams. Rice also has won the last two meetings.
Following the Rice game, Southern Miss hits the road again, playing the third road game in the last four when the Lady Eagles travel to Birmingham, Ala., to face UAB on Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
