Women's Basketball Hosts SMU

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's basketball team will host SMU in Conference USA action on Thursday, Jan. 17, in Reed Green Coliseum. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The team will be recognizing and honoring all Southern Miss faculty and staff at the game. Each Southern Miss faculty and staff member will receive a special ticket offer of buy 1 ticket get 1 ticket free.

Lady Eagle Basketball Team Outlast SMU, 74-67
Sophomore Jamierra Faulkner scored a career-high 28 points for Southern Miss and the Lady Eagles connected on 8-of-10 free throws in the final 26 seconds to stave off a SMU comeback for the 74-67 victory.
Southern Miss Preview
Southern Miss (9-6, 1-1) is coming off a 63-57 loss at Memphis on Jan. 13, snapping a four-game winning streak. Tanecka Carey led the way with a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds while Jerontay Clemson had 15 points. Jamierra Faulkner and Clemons came up with eight of the 10 steals.
The trio of Carey, Faulkner and Clemons continue to pace the Lady Eagles in scoring. Carey is tops at 16.5 points with Faulkner next at 16.3 and Clemons at 10.9 points. Clemons also paces the team in rebounds, averaging 7.1 per game.
Southern Miss is averaging 62.5 points and 39.4 rebounds while shooting 39.5 percent from the field and 63.0 percent from the line. The Lady Eagle defense allows 61.3 points on 38.2 percent shooting from the field. The team is forcing its opponents into 21.2 turnovers per game while coming up with 10.8 steals per game.
SMU brings an 11-4 overall record and 2-0 in league play following a 69-54 win over UCF. Four players scored in double figures led by Korina Baker with 17 points. Destynee Hives-McCray scored 12 points followed by Alisha Filmore with 11 and Gabrielle Wilkins added 10. Keena Mays pulled down nine rebounds.
Mays leads the team in scoring with 22.3 points per game while Alisha Filmore is next at 12.5. Akil Simpson paces the team in rebounding with 7.5 boards per game.
The Mustangs are averaging 68.3 points and 39.3 rebounds per game while shooting 39.6 percent from the field and 65.7 percent from the line. SMU has held its opponents to 58.9 points per game on 38.1 percent shooting from the field.
Southern Miss vs. SMU Series
This is the 10th meeting between the two teams dating back to 1989. SMU leads the series 5-4 as the Lady Eagles won the initial meeting. The teams have played one overtime game with SMU winning that contest in the first round of the 1995 NCAA Tournament. Southern Miss has won the last two meetings.
Following the SMU game, Southern Miss travels to Orlando, Fla., to face UCF on Sunday at 1 p.m. central time.
