Lady Eagle Basketball Team Captures First Conference Win with 62-54 Victory Over Memphis
The Southern Miss women's basketball team snapped an eight-game losing streak and a 15-game road losing streak with a 62-54 win over Memphis Thursday night.

Southern Miss Preview Southern Miss comes into today's game with a 9-5 record, 1-0 in Conference USA. The 9-5 start is the best since the 2007-08 season when the Lady Eagles went 10-4 in their first 14 games. The Black and Gold have won four straight and five of their last six games after defeating Marshall, 48-46, Thursday night in their conference opener.

Jamierra Faulkner was the only player to score in double figures, scoring 15 points. Tanecka Carey and Ance Celmina grabbed six rebounds apiece. Celmina also scored nine points.

The trio of Faulkner, Carey, and Jerontay Clemons continue to pace the Lady Eagles in scoring. Faulkner leads the way with 17.1 points per game while Carey is next at 16.1 points and Clemons at 10.6 points. Clemons also paces the team in rebounds, averaging 7.4 per game.

Southern Miss is averaging 62.9 points and 40.0 rebounds while shooting 39.7 percent from the field and 62.7 percent from the line. The Lady Eagle defense allows 61.1 points on 37.9 percent shooting from the field. The team is forcing its opponents into 21.4 turnovers per game while coming up with 10.9 steals per game.

Scouting Memphis Memphis brings a 9-6 overall record and 0-1 in conference play after dropping its conference opener at Memphis Thursday night. Nicole Dickson just missed a double-double with 23 points and nine rebounds while Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir netted 17 points and Ariel Hearn added 15. Asianna Fuqua-Bey pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds.

Dickson is the top scorer for the Tigers, averaging a league best 20.9 points leads. She is one of four Tigers averaging in double figures. Hearn is next at 15.0 points followed by Mooriah Rowser at 12.0 and Abdul-Qaadir at 10.4 points per game. Dickson also paces the team in rebounding with 6.7 boards per game.

The Tigers are averaging 73.5 points, also tops in the league, and 43.2 rebounds per game while shooting a league best 43.5 percent from the field and 68.3 percent from the line.

Southern Miss vs. Memphis Series This is the one of the longer running series with an opponent. This is the 54th meeting between the two teams dating back to 1976-77, the first season of varsity status for Southern Miss. Memphis leads the overall series 29-24. The two teams split the regular season meetings.
