This is the second time that Southern Miss has opened conference play against Charlotte
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women’s basketball team embarks on their first Conference USA road trip of the season this morning as they travel to Charlotte, N.C. for a meeting with the 49ers on Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. CT. The team will finish their road swing against WKU, a rematch of last year’s C-USA Championship Game, on Saturday Jan. 6 at 2:00 p.m. CT.
The Lady Eagles are 11-11 all-time in the first C-USA match of the season and have won two of the last three that have come on the road. This is the second time that Southern Miss has opened conference play against Charlotte. The two programs last opened conference play against each other on Jan. 7, 1996, a 95-71 contest that Southern Miss won. The matchup was also the premiere C-USA game for each school.
The 49ers, coming off a 90-74 loss to Mercer, are 4-9 on the season and are led by point guard Laia Raventos. She paces the team in points per game (15.0), field goal percentage (.469) and assists per game (5.0). Raventos is also the league’s leading pick-pocket at three steals a game. Dara Pearson is the team’s leading rebounder and has grabbed 115 total rebounds on the year, third most in C-USA.
The Lady Eagles will look to use momentum from a 96-46 win against Blue Mountain to open the conference slate with a win. In Southern Miss’ last outing Kennedy Gavin and Molly Brown hit career marks with the total points and Shonte Hailes poured in 21 points, her second highest point total on the season thus far. Allie Kennedy also dished out a career-high six assists.
