Lady Eagles hit the road for their final non-conference tilt

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's basketball will open 2013 on the road when the Lady Eagles travel to UNO for their final non-conference contest Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. in the Lakefront Arena.
Southern Miss Runs Past New Orleans, 85-37
The Southern Miss women's basketball team finished the game shooting 59.1 percent from the field and scored 66 points in the paint in running past New Orleans, 85-37, Sunday afternoon.
Southern Miss Preview
Southern Miss (7-5) is coming off a 76-46 win over crosstown foe William Carey on Dec. 31. Four Lady Eagles tallied double figure points as Jamierra Faulkner led the way with 23 points to go with nine assists and seven steals. Tanecka Carey scored 14 points followed by Ance Celmina and Jerontay Clemons with 10 points apiece. Caron Brown hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds.
The trio of Faulkner, Carey, and Clemons continue to pace the Lady Eagles in scoring. Carey is tops at 17.3 points per game followed by Faulkner right behind at 17.2 and Clemons at 11.0 points. Clemons also paces the team in rebounds, averaging 8.1 per game.
Southern Miss is averaging 63.7 points and 40.0 rebounds while shooting 39.9 percent from the field and 62.7 percent from the line. The Lady Eagle defense allows 62.6 points on 38.0 percent shooting from the field. The team is forcing its opponents into 21.8 turnovers per game while coming up with 11.9 steals per game.
UNO comes into the contest with a 1-13 record following an 87-61 loss at LSU on Dec. 31. Keri Thomas led the way with a team-high 21 points while Mechel'le Thomas and Mirjam Sipos scored 12 points apiece.
Keri Thomas leads the team in scoring with 12.9 points per game while Mathilde Fogelstrom paces the team in rebounding with 9.0 boards per game.
The Privateers are averaging 53.6 points and 33.4 rebounds per game while shooting 35.2 percent from the field and 65.9 percent from the line.
Southern Miss vs. UNO Series
This is the 31st meeting between the two teams dating back to the 1975-76 season. The two teams faced each other for the first time on January 12, 1976 in Reed Green Coliseum with the Lady Eagles winning that matchup. Southern Miss has won 10 out of the last 11 meetings between the two teams.
Following the UNO game, Southern Miss opens Conference USA play at home against Marshall on Jan. 10. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
