HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss placed four players in double figure scoring as the Lady Eagles cruised to a 76-46 win over cross-town foe William Carey, 76-46.
Jamierra Faulkner led all scorers with a game-high 23 points to go with nine assists and seven steals while Tanecka Carey scored 14 points and Ance Celmina and Jerontay Clemons netted 10 points apiece. Caron Brown hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds.
Southern Miss finished the game shooting 49.2 percent after shooting a blistering 58.3 percent in the first half.
"I thought we played a really good first half," Coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "I thought we did a great job of getting our post players involved. I was not real pleased with the second half. I know we played a lot of different combinations, but you have to be ready to play every time no matter who's in the game."
William Carey scored the first two points of the game before Carey came right back connecting on a three-pointer before the game turned into a back and forth affair. Over the next eight minutes, the teams went back and forth as Carey never trailed more than six points during the stretch. With Southern Miss leading 17-11 at the 13:36 mark, the Crusaders used an 8-4 run to cut the lead to 21-19.
Southern Miss then used a 16-0 run over 5:07 in pushing the Lady Eagle lead to double digits when Clemons started the run after hitting the first of two free throws. Clemons followed with a layup before Celmina added back-to-back buckets. Faulkner added a three followed by another Celmina basket before Faulkner ended the run scoring the last four points.
The Lady Eagles led 48-27 at the half.
Southern Miss held William Carey to just nine points over the first 11:13 while extending to 20 or more points. Carey connected on only 20 percent of its shots in the second half and finished the game shooting just 29 percent from the field.
Erin Holifield came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points for the Crusaders.
The Lady Eagles held the rebounding edge, 44-40.
Southern Miss will travel to New Orleans to open 2013 with a noon tip time in the Lakefront Arena on Dec. 5.
