HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women’s basketball team surged past Blue Mountain 96-46 in Reed Green Coliseum Saturday evening.

“I thought we played hard, aggressive and we were able to play defense to create things on the offensive side of the court for us,” said Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis. “We must continue to attack on the run to get some easy buckets for us if we want to have success during conference play.”

Every Lady Eagle that logged minutes scored, six of them having at least seven points, and three finished in double figures. The contest, the first between the two schools, featured 70 points in the paint, 28 fast break points and 26 assists for the Black and Gold.

Shonte Hailes and Jayla King paced the Southern Miss offense. Hailes led all scorers with 21 and King finished with 18. The two would combine to shoot .800 from the field and both hit the double-digit mark before halftime. Megan Brown also hit double digits with 10 points while Molly Brown chipped in nine, tying her career-high. Kennedy Gavin’s eight points set a career-high and Amber Landing swatted three shots, topping her current per game average and bringing her season total to 30.

Southern Miss has snagged 45 total rebounds for the fifth time this season and are still undefeated when outrebounding its opponent.

“We’ve really worked on that and focused on rebounding the basketball because it gives you extra opportunities,” McNelis said.

The Lady Eagles work on the glass provided them with 18 offensive rebounds, the same number of total rebounds collected by the Lady Toppers, and 17 second chance points.

The Lady Eagles, closing their non-conference schedule, will now begin Conference USA play with trips to Charlotte and WKU. Southern Miss and the 49ers will meet on Jan. 4 at 10:30 a.m. CT and then see the Lady Toppers in Bowling Green, Ky. Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. CT.

Fans can watch the games on CUSA.TV or listen to Josh West on the broadcast via The Score 1400 AM and the Southern Miss Game Day App starting 30 minutes before tipoff.
