Dec. 18, 2012
MARTIN, Tenn. - UT-Martin outscored Southern Miss 16-9 in the overtime period in taking an 87-80 win over the visiting Lady Eagles on Tuesday night.
The Skyhawks finished the overtime period shooting 55.6 percent from the field that included 3-of-4 from behind the arc.
Jamierra Faulkner led all scorers with a career-high 36 points while Tanecka Carey finished with 25 points for Southern Miss. Faulkner was the top rebounder grabbing 10 rebounds in posting a double-double.
"This was probably the best offensive game we've played all season," Coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "I thought out defensive scheme was good, we just had some mental lapses. We left the shooter a couple of times and they hit the threes. We made the mental errors in crunch time situations and we didn't the same execution on offense.
"To win the game in regulation, you can't ask for a better shot than what Jamierra Faulkner had," McNelis said. "It was a great shot and executed to perfection, the ball just didn't go in. It was a heck of a shot."
Southern Miss held a 67-59 lead at the 4:35 mark in regular when UTM mounted its comeback to force the overtime period. The Skyhawks outscored Southern Miss 12-4 over the final 4:18 as Katie Schubert started the run with a three-pointer followed by a pair of free throws from Heather Butler. After two timeouts by UTM, Faulkner worked her way into the lane, but missed the final shot with just 1.1 seconds remaining and sending the game into overtime.
Southern Miss opened the game scoring the first 10 points on 4-of-5 from the field as Carey started the run with three followed by a Celmina bucket underneath. Faulkner scored after a steal and layup before Carey connected on her second triple. The Lady Eagles extended the lead to 15-3 before UTM put together an 18-5 run over a 5:31 in taking a 21-20 lead.
For the next three minutes the teams traded baskets until Carey ignited a 13-2 run with a three-pointer. Faulkner followed with a basket before Carey added a tip-in for the Lady Eagles.
