HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's basketball team rolled past Sam Houston State 58-38 on Military Appreciation Night for the team's seventh win on the season.
Southern Miss struggled to score in the opening quarter, only scoring eight points, but opened the scoring in the second quarter by going on a 23-0 run that lasted more than eight minutes, spanning across halftime. Fueled by 14 points from Jayla King and 11 from Megan Brown, the Lady Eagles would have a 37 point second half.
"It was the good, bad and the ugly," Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "The last two minutes going into halftime we were able to get some players in there and get some good combinations."
King and Brown both recorded double-doubles, marking the second time this season that two Lady Eagles have done so simultaneously. King's came by way of 18 points and 10 rebounds and she is amidst a three game double-double run. Brown's double-double came in the same statistical categories as King's but with 11 points and a career-high 12 points.
"In my mind my shot wasn't hitting too much in the first half, like the rest of the team," Brown said. "So I went with the mentality to rebound the ball and that my shot would come later."
Hanah Lott added to the scoring with nine points, all coming from beyond the arc. She also chipped in three rebounds and two assists in her 18 minutes of play.
"I was really proud of Hanah Lott," McNelis said. "She not only played well, but she talked well on the floor, helping us communicate out there."
