OXFORD, Miss. – Despite outscoring Ole Miss in the second half, the Southern Miss Lady Eagles were downed 68-59 at The Pavilion in front of 8,229 kids on Education Day.

The Rebels stifled any offensive momentum in the first half by holding three Southern Miss starters scoreless.

“If our two leading scorers, Shonte Hailes and Jayla King, don’t get a bucket, it’s going to be hard to win a half or even a quarter.” said Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis.

The Lady Eagles responded in the second half by scoring on three of the first four possessions and outscoring Ole Miss 23-22 in the third quarter and 19-14 in the fourth quarter. The Lady Eagles continued the pressure in the fourth with full court pressure, holding the Rebels offense field goalless for nine and a half minutes. The Rebels withstood the storm by shooting 12-of-16 from the charity stripe, pushing themselves further ahead when Southern Miss got within reach.

“We were frustrated by how we played in the first half, but I can’t say enough about how we fought back,” McNelis said. “We remained composed, and it was hard to do because it was so hard to hear in here. Kyle Felton did a good job on their bigs and I’m very proud of her. This game gives us a chance to grow as a team and an opportunity to build team chemistry. That helps us in many ways.”

Eight Lady Eagles all registered points and the team outrebounded the Rebels 45-34. Southern Miss also tallied 32 total points in the paint.

Megan Brown and King led the scoring effort for the Lady Eagles, both gathering 12 points. This is the fifth time King has been the leading scorer for Southern Miss and the third time this season that Brown has been the lead point getter.

King corralled a game-high 10 rebounds for her 10 career double-double. King, who tallied a double-double against South Alabama, has now notched two consecutive double-double games this season.

Southern Miss will be back in action on Friday night, Dec. 15, against Sam Houston State for Military Appreciation Night. All active, retired, and reserved members of the military will receive free admission, as will their immediate family members, with proof of military ID.
