HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Redshirt senior Jayla King tallied her third double-double of the season in Southern Miss’ 78-57 loss to South Alabama Thursday night. This is the first regular season home contest the Lady Eagles have dropped since Jan. 14 of this year.

“I tell you what,” said Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis. “South Alabama is a good basketball team. They can shoot it from deep, have great post players and they can board the basketball. When you can do those three things you cause a lot of problems. They scored 16 points on offensive rebounds and they shot the cover off the ball. They didn’t go to North Carolina and win because of lack of skill.”

South Alabama started out hot by hitting their first three field goal attempts, all three’s, to jump out to a 9-2 lead. The Lady Eagles would overtake the Jags at the end of the first period of play, 17-16, but South Alabama wrestled the lead back three minutes into the second quarter and would never relinquish it.

Jayla King posted 22 points and 11 rebounds for her ninth career double-double and this is the first time the redshirt senior has notched 20 point scoring figures in back-to-back games. It was also her ninth time as the team’s leading scorer.

Despite having her lowest point total of the season, sophomore Shonte Hailes had a season-high eight helpers. With 11 points, redshirt junior Megan Brown posted her fifth straight double-digit scoring total, tying Hailes for most consecutive games with 10 or more points this season.

Southern Miss got a sample of what Conference USA play has for them scheduling wise as the Lady Eagles came home from a road trip early Wednesday morning and then played the next day. The team has the next few days off to prepare for finals and will be back in action Tuesday Dec. 12 at Ole Miss.

South Miss last played in Oxford, Miss. exactly two years previous and walked away with a 57-38 win. The game will tip at 11 a.m. and, starting 30 minutes prior tip, fans can hear Josh West on the call by tuning in to WFOR 1400 AM The Score or listening through the Southern Miss Game Day App. The game will also be streamed through SEC Network Plus on WatchESPN.com and the ESPN app.
