HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss women's basketball came up short against UAB, falling by a score of 55-50 in Conference USA action on Sunday.
"We had opportunities there in the end to win this game, but we just fell short," Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "I am proud of the way we showed up and played with a tremendous amount of effort. Jerontay Clemons, Tanecka Carey and Jamierra Faulkner played for 40 minutes. I can't say enough about Nitesha and Niesha Pierce and the way they battled today. Yes, we were a little short-handed but this group gave a lot of effort."
Southern Miss drops to 12-14 overall and 4-9 in league was led by Tanecka Carey with 11 points followed by Jamierra Faulkner and Jerontay Clemons with 10 points apiece. Faulkner also added 11 assists in recording her sixth double-double of the season. Clemons just missed a double-double as she grabbed nine rebounds.
The teams battled back and forth through the first five minutes of the game before Clemons sparked a 6-0 run when she connected on a pair of free throws followed by an Ance Celmina basket. Faulkner found Clemons open for another basket in giving Southern Miss a 14-8 lead. UAB came back to tie the game at 16-16 using an 8-2 run.
After trading baskets, UAB scored eight straight points in taking a 25-18 lead with 6:50 remaining before the half. Southern Miss cut the lead to three (27-24), buy UAB finished the final four minutes outscoring the home team, 6-1, for a 32-25 halftime lead.
UAB extended its lead to 14 points by the 10:42 mark in the game (49-35) before Southern Miss mounted a comeback. Carey connected on a baseline jump to start the run as Niesha Pierce hit a three from the deep in the left corner to get the margin under double digits (49-40). Clemons followed with a layup after a steal just before a media timeout.
Out of the timeout, Amber Jones got loose for a Blazer basket, but the Lady Eagles answered with a three from Carey and a free throw to with 3:32 for the 51-46 score. For the next two minutes, neither team managed to score until Essence Baucom hit one-of-two frees for UAB. Southern Miss scored four quick points to get within two points, 52-50, on back-to-back layups by Faulkner. After Jones added a free to for the 53-50 score, Southern Miss had a several opportunities to tie the game but couldn't convert. UAB sealed the win on a pair of free throws from Jones with 21 seconds remaining.
Karisma Chapman and Jones led UAB with 15 points apiece while Michaela Kleist added 12 points. Chapman also had nine rebounds.
UAB held a 44-41 rebounding edge against the Lady Eagles and outscored USM 28-24 in the paint.
Southern Miss now travels to Marshall for a Thursday night contest with a 6 p.m. (central) start time.
