Women's Basketball Out Runs FIU 106-96
MIAMI, Fla. - The Southern Miss women's basketball team outscored FIU 65-46 in the second half and had three players score 20 or more points in running past FIU 106-96 Wednesday evening.
Jamierra Faulkner scored a team-best 30 points while sophomore Jerontay Clemons scored a career-high with 26 points and freshman Brittanny Dinkins had 24 points. The Lady Eagles shot 60.5 percent from the field in the second and finished the game shooting 54.4 percent.
Southern Miss ran out to a 13-3 lead six minutes into the game before FIU put together a 14-6 run to cut the lead to 19-17. The Lady Eagles then got back-to-back baskets from Faulkner and Clemons to push the lead to 23-17. Over the next 6:14, FIU outscored Southern Miss 29-10 in taking a 46-33 lead with 2:00 remaining in the half. During that run, FIU's Jerica Coley scored 18 points. Southern Miss was able to cut the lead to single digits before the half with an 8-4 run. FIU led 50-41 at the half.
Southern Miss opened the second half outscoring FIU 14-10 in the first four minutes to cut the lead to 60-55. The teams traded a pair of baskets each before Dinkins connected on back-to-back threes to kick start a 14-7 run over 3:57 to tie the game at 71-71 with 10:10 remaining the game.
For the next 3:51, the two teams battled back and forth. With the scored tied at 82-82, Dinkins connected on her fourth three-pointer to put the Lady Eagles ahead for good. After FIU got a part of free throws, the Lady Eagles scored six unanswered points in pushing their lead to 91-84. Southern Miss outscored FIU 15-10 over the final 3:46 for the 106-96 win.
Southern Miss held the rebounding edge39-32. The Lady Eagles had 24 fast break points, got 19 points off 13 FIU turnovers and 16 second chance points.
Coley led FIU with a game-high 47 points while Tynia McKinzie had 15.
Southern Miss heads to Florida Atlantic for a Saturday matchup with a 1 p.m. tip time.
