Southern Miss Upends UTSA 83-60
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women’s basketball team (12-8, 4-3) upended UTSA (3-17, 1-7) 83-60 Saturday night to finish the week’s home stand 1-1. Four Lady Eagles eclipsed more than 10 points, Megan Brown leading the squad with 19, marking the first time that four Southern Miss players have hit double-figures in back-to-back games this season.
“Our beginning wasn’t very pretty, but our end was pretty good,” said Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis. “We challenged the team at halftime and I’m very pleased with the way they responded. We challenged them individually and as a team. We got every loose ball and our bodies were flying everywhere in the second half”
Southern Miss outscored the Roadrunners 30-12 in the third quarter, including a 10-0 run to start the third period of play, and shot 62.5 percent from the floor in the last half of the game. The Lady Eagle defense smothered the Roadrunners in the final two quarters, holding them to just seven made field goals in the ending periods and Southern Miss outperformed UTSA 51-27 in that span.
Molly Brown set a career mark with her 10 points, six of them coming from three-point range, and two of Brown’s field goals in the last four minutes of the first half helped Southern Miss wrestle the lead back from UTSA before the teams headed to the locker room.
“Molly Brown kept us alive in the second quarter to keep it close before halftime,” McNelis said.
This is the fifth time this season that the Lady Eagles have notched 80 or more points and Southern Miss’ 42 total points in the paint is also the most the Lady Eagles have tallied in the lane this season
Southern Miss goes on the road next week at Rice on Thursday, Feb. 1 and will return for a home contest against Marshall on Sunday, Feb. 4.
