Southern Miss Outlasted 81-60 by WKU
This was just the seventh meeting between the two schools
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Southern Miss women’s basketball team (8-7, 0-2) was outlasted 81-60 by WKU (11-4, 2-0) Saturday afternoon at E.A. Diddle Arena in the Lady Eagles second game of Conference USA play.
Southern Miss Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis shook up the Lady Eagles lineup by not starting a true center for the first time this season. McNelis went with Shonte Hailes, Megan Brown, Alarie Mayze, Hanah Lott and Jayla King to begin the game.
“We started a small line up and we’ll start a small line up again,” McNelis said. “Obviously that line up played very well together. We made some critical errors at critical times in the game, but this is the first time we played well for 30 minutes. That’s a huge step.”
The two teams got off to a scrappy start with the opening tip going to the floor and Southern Miss jumping on it to control the ball, gaining the first possession of the contest. The first half of play was a seesaw battle and the first 20 minutes featured seven lead changes and four ties.
Down five coming into the second half, the Lady Eagles controlled play as the two teams came back onto the court. Southern Miss went on a 13-7 run and cut the Lady Toppers lead to just as single point at 5:34 in the third quarter.
WKU went on a run off their own, getting out in front by as many as eight, before back-to-back Ivy Brown three-pointers put the Lady Toppers out in front for the remainder of the game.
Megan Brown and King led the offensive charge for the Lady Eagles, both tallying 16 points. This is the third game that Megan Brown has tallied at least 16 points and the eighth for King. Hailes and Mayze also hit double figures, marking the first game since Feb. 18, 2017 at FAU that four players totaled double-figures.
Southern Miss has their first C-USA home stand of the year coming up this week with LA Tech coming to Reed Green Coliseum on Thursday Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. Fans can watch the game on CUSA.TV or listen to Josh West on the broadcast via The Score 1400 AM and the Southern Miss Game Day App starting 30 minutes before tipoff.
