Burdeaux, Smith receive final Southern Miss SAAC weekly honor for the year

May 10, 2017

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The final Southern Miss SAAC Players of the Week both hail from the baseball diamond in Dylan Burdeaux and Colt Smith.

Burdeaux had at least two hits in all three games as the Golden Eagles swept nationally ranked and second-place Florida Atlantic. Burdeaux currently has a four-game hitting streak. In the series opener against the Owls, Burdeaux drove in a career-best six runs with a three-hit game that included his ninth home run of the season. He added a two-hit contest in Saturday’s game with his team-leading 15th stolen base, while driving in the tying and game-winning runs in the 11th on Sunday with a single to left to drive in his team-leading 59 and 60 RBI. Burdeaux has been clutch at the plate as he has hit safely in 24 of his last 26 games and has two or more hits in 21 of those contests. He leads the team in at bats (232), runs (50), hits (81), doubles (17), RBI (60) and stolen bases (15).

In his first career start for the Golden Eagles, Smith limited Florida Atlantic to just hits and two walks over seven innings of work for the victory as he improved to 4-0 on the season. He allowed just five batters reach bases (one was an addition hit by pitch) and only two runners reached second base. After allowing a one-out walk in the fourth, Smith retired the final 11 batters he faced. He did not give up a hit after the second inning.

Smith was also named C-USA Pitcher of the Week, the first for the Golden Eagles since 2015. The team plays its final three regular-season home games Friday through Sunday against UAB, beginning at 6 p.m.
