Three claim latest Southern Miss weekly SAAC honor

April 25, 2017

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Big weekends by Southern Miss baseball's Matt Wallner, golf's Henriette Syr and track and field's Nadia Maffo allowed for all three to be voted SAAC Players of the Week by their peers.

Wallner hit safely in all five games on the week to increase his current hitting streak to eight. He is just one home run shy of tying the freshman record (13 in 1999) after hitting a two-run blast to right at Tulane. He ranks second on the team in RBIs with 41 and hit a two-run triple and a two-run single in the Saturday ODU game. He has the longest current reached-base streak at 32 games. The baseball team will be on the road for a Tuesday night contest at South Alabama before playing at Middle Tennessee this weekend.

Syr finished second at the C-USA Championships. It's the highest finish at the championships for a Golden Eagle. She is also the first golfer to be named to the All-Tournament Team. Her 54-hole total of 215 (-1) tied her personal best and is the fourth-lowest tourney total this year.

Maffo continued her stellar freshman season, finishing first in the hammer throw with a personal and school record of 60.90M. She currently ranks first in C-USA and 37th in NCAA and 19th in the East Region. The team competed at the LSU Alumni Gold and will now host the Southern Miss Open Friday and Saturday.
