Irby, Jerse named SAAC players of the week

March 22, 2017

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss junior Mason Irby (baseball) and sophomore Tjasa Jerse (women's tennis) earned SAAC Player of the Week honors as voted on by their peers for their performances March 13-20.

Irby, who bats No. 2 in the Southern Miss order, hit safely in all five games to extend his hitting streak to a season-high of six games. It currently ranks as the longest streak on the team as the Golden Eagles went 5-0 last week. He scored 10 runs over those five games and holds the team lead in runs scored this season with 22. At the plate, Irby finished the week with a pair of three-hit games.

One of his hits during the week was his first homer, which helped build an early lead on Louisiana Tech in the middle game of the series. He also added a run-scoring single in the eighth inning of the final game of the set to give the team an important insurance run as the Golden Eagles recorded a three-game sweep of the nationally ranked Bulldogs.

Jerse, who hails from Slovenia, is on a six-match win streak where she has only dropped one set. Five of the last six wins have been won on courts 5, with the other played on court 4. Jerse is 13-2 on the season and leads the Golden Eagles with the most wins. Alex Kitchen is second with 9 wins. In her 15 matches, Jerse has only been forced to three sets one time (March 16) against Aida Kelic from Winthrop University.

The baseball team gets its first home C-USA action this weekend against Marshall, beginning Friday at 6 p.m. The women's tennis squad next plays March 30 at home against LSU-Alexandria at 2:30 p.m.
