Golden Eagle Track Teams Improve in Standings After Day Two
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Southern Miss men and women's track and field teams improved their standings in day two of the Conference USA Outdoor Championship, posting several top-eight performances.
The Golden Eagles moved into seventh place, following a second-place finish by Marvin Lucas in the long jump at 24-11, and a qualifying mark for the NCAA Mid-East regional. Cedric Norman took sixth place in the long jump at 232.75 and scored three points for the Eagles. Steve Griffin finished eighth in the decathlon, scoring 5,725 points in the event. Eric Lyon finished sixth in the hammer throw, setting a school record in the process, with a throw of 15611.
The Lady Eagles finished the second day with a total of 14 points, moving into ninth-place after nine events scored. Kate Juedes and Krista Miller combined for five points in the high jump, recording a 55 height and a tie for fifth-place. Juedes finished fifth in the javelin with a throw of 1303, scoring four points. Shannon Weaver finished fifth in the long jump with a jump of 188, scoring three points for the Lady Eagles. Dasha Wakefield added another point with her eighth-place finish in the pole vault, 110.25.
The Conference USA meet concludes Saturday with the finals of all the races, the relays and field events men's high jump, discus, triple jump for both the men and women, javelin, pole vault and shot put for women.
