Southern Miss Men And Women Post Wins In Telcom Classic

MONROE, La.-- The Southern Miss men's and women's track and field teams turned in several outstanding performances at the ULM Telcom Classic, Saturday. The Eagles won a combined seven events.

Junior S. Dori Sims shattered the school record by 3.03 seconds in the 400 meters, finishing first with a time of 51.33. She beat the rest of the field by 7.33 seconds. Tabitha White owned the school record, set in 1999, with a time of 54.36.

Freshman Nikki Montgomery had a personal-best jump of 19'3" finishing first ahead of teammate Sandra Allen, who jumped 18'9" Jessica Crump finished first for the second time this season in the 800 meters with a time of 2:15.37, almost two seconds ahead of the next runner.

The 4x400 meter relay team of Sims, Crump, Allen and Hope Sinclair ran a season-best time of 3:46.54, finishing first and knocking off almost two seconds. Yolanda Johnson posted a season-best time of 24.90 in the 200 meters and finished fifth. Keisha Johnson finished seventh with a time of 25.54. Amadi ran a season-best 59.60 in the 400 meters, finishing fourth. Both Tomeka Shaffer and Lena Gates turned in season-best time of 5:15.22 and 5,26.62 in the 1,500 meters. Sims and Montgomery finished two and four in the triple jump, jumping 38'3 1/2" and 37'5" respectively. Anna Askew finished third in the discus with a toss of 132'10".

On the men's side, George Daley ran a time of 52.85 in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles and finished first. Dywon Pullins took first place in the triple jump with a jump of 48'8" Bryan Burner won the shot put with a toss of 53'2".

Cedric Norman finished tied for first in the long jump with a jump of 23'10" Wenston Riley finished second in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.31. Emmanuel Osabutey finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.88, with Steve Griffin finishing fifth with a time of 15.54. Kenny Johnson ran a 48.15 in the 400 meters and finished fourth.

Southern Miss' next meet is the Conference USA Championship at Tampa, Fla., May 10-12.
