Golden Eagles Finish First, Lady Eagles Take Second at the ULM Classic
- The Southern Miss men's track and field team took first place at the ULM Classic, while the Lady Eagles finished a close second to the host UL-Monroe.
The Golden Eagles field event performers scored 81 of the Southern Miss' 117 points and edging out Louisiana-Monroe, who finished second with 90 points. Hinds was third among the 10 teams with 82 points followed by Arkansas-Little Rock and Northwestern State tied for fourth with 45 points, Southern Arkansas (43) and Louisiana Tech (39).
Michael Hardrick took first in the high jump with a jump of 6'6.75". Matt Fant and Michael Ludlow finished 1, 3 in the pole vault. Fant finished first with a jump of 15'0, while Ludlow's took third with a jump of 14'0". Marvin Lucas just missed a school record by 1/4", finishing first with a season- and personal-best jump of 25'3.25". Marcus Polk finished second in the long jump with a season-best jump of 23'6.25". Bryan Bruner took first in the shot put with a season-best toss of 55'5.50", third in the discus with a season-best throw of 160'4". Noah Bryant was second in the discus with a throw of 161'1", and took fourth in the shot with a season-best throw of 46'8.25". Casey McGehee finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 139'11". Eric Lyon was sixth in the shot with a throw of 43'8". Shane Brandford finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 172'11".
Brandford took third in the 200 with a time of 21.90. David Williams finished fifth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:03.58. Tavius Freeman posted a season-best time in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.85, finishing second, then followed that with a third-place finish in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 59.80. The 4x100-meter relay team a posted season-best time of 41.42, finishing second and ran 3:24.16 in the 4x400-meter relay to finish fifth.
On the women's side, the Lady Eagles finished second in the meet with 133 points behind UL-Monroe with 157. Ole Miss finished third with 90 points and Louisiana Tech was fourth with 77.
Prudence Reid posted season-best performance in the 200 meters, taking first-place with a time of 23.62. Yolanda Johnson finished fifth with a time of 24.32. Rena Tate ran a season-best time of 12.42 in the 100 meters to finish fifth. Chiquita Pickens took third in the 400 meters with a time of 1:05:09. Oby Amadi finished third in the 800 with a time of 2:18.53 and Karen Tankersley was sixth with a time of 2:27.33. Keri White ran a season-best 5:02.93 in the 1,500 meters, finishing second, while Rose Kurui turned in a time of 5:07.86 for third place, and Tomeka Shaffer finished sixth with a time of 5:15.86. Keri White took second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 11:13.89, while Kurui ran a time of 11:32.84 for third. The 4x100-meter relay team finished second with a time of 46.62 and took third in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:00.69.
In the field events, Krista Miller, Kate Juedes and Sabrina Norwood finished 1-2-3 in the high jump. Miller posted a season-best jump of 5'7.25" for first, Juedes took second at 5'3.25" and Norwood tied for third at 5'3.25". Sandra Allen was first in the long jump with a jump of 18'10.75". Michelle Zorn finished third in the shot with a throw of 39'6". Tamara Dayes finished first in the discus with a throw of 142'2". Juedes took second in the javelin with a throw of 115'6" and Kristen Preau was third toss of 114'7".
Southern Miss concludes its regular season at the Conference USA Track and Field Championships in Louisville, Ky., May 9-11.
