DES MOINES, Iowa -- - Southern Miss' Vincent Tanui became the second Golden Eagle performer to win an event at the 98th Annual Drake Relays on Thursday, when Tanui captured the 10,000-meter title with a time of 29:56.71.
Tanui, who placed first out of 40 competitors, set a new school record in the process.
"It is hard running alone," Tanui said. "You have to pace and control yourself. I am used to running 5K's. I knew it was O.K. to run slow and I don't always have to go fast. After one lap, I still had to tell myself there are 24 more to go."
Tanui, who just missed a regional qualifying mark said, "I was trying to get under 29:30 because that is a regional qualifying time, but it was cold and I like it better when it is hot. I liked competing here. It is a nice a place and a nice track. I really enjoyed it."
