Golden Eagle Track Teams Have Solid Showing at the Samford Twilight Meet
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Southern Miss men and women's outdoor track teams had a solid showing at the Samford Twilight Meet, Saturday.

The Golden Eagle performances were highlighted by strong performances in the field events. Cedric Norman won his sixth competition of the outdoor season, jumping 7’2”, six inches higher than the next competitor. Teammate Michael Hardrick was third with a jump of 6’4”. Matt Fant took third place in the pole vault with a height of 14’0”. The Golden Eagles finished one-two in the long jump, with Marcus Polk jumping 21’10.75” for first place and Corey Seals was second with a jump of 21’9.50”. Noah Bryant was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 45’9” and he finished second in the discus with a throw of 151’8”. Jeb Meschke won his second consecutive javelin competition with a throw of 203’9”. Conrad Chanove finished third with a throw of 196’3” and Marvin Lucas was fifth with a throw of 183’1”.

Marcus Polk finished second in the 100 meters with a time of 10.80, and followed with a third-place finish in the 200 meters at 21.69. Marvin Lucas ran a 10.87 in the 100 meters, finishing fourth and teammate Shane Brandford ran an 11.08 to finish fifth. Kenny Johnson posted a time of 48.04 in the 400 meters for third place and Marvin Williams finished fifth with a time of 49.95. Jerry Teachey ran a 1:56.30 in the 800 meters, finishing seventh. The Golden Eagle 4x10-meter relay team posted a time of 42.21 for first place. The 4x400 team ran a time of 3:18.02 for first-place.

The Lady Eagle performances were highlighted with a one-two finish in the 100 meters and a one-two-three-sweep in the 400 meters. Angela Johnson and Prudence Reid finished one-two in the 100 meters with times of 12.07 and 12.09, respectively. S’Dori Sims, Kasey House and Candi Johnson swept the top three spots in the 400 meters. Sims posted a time of 56.90, followed by House at 57.07 and Johnson 57.92. Jessica Crump was fifth in the same event with a time of 58.67.

Alisha Edwards ran a time of 2:22.87 in the 800 meters, finishing second. Keri White was the top finisher in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:35.28. Karen Tankersley was fourth with a time of 10:59.16. The 4x100 meter relay teams recorded times of 46.76 for the A-team and 48.93 for the B-team, finished first and third. The 4x400 meter relay team recorded a time of 3:54.97 for first-place and the B-team ran a 4:05.50 for second place.

In the field events, the Lady Eagles finished two-three in the high jump with Krista Miller leading the way with a height of 5’6”, followed by Sabrina Norwood at 5’6, also. Dasha Wakefield was first in the pole vault with a height of 11’00”. Shannon Weaver won the long jump with a jump of 17’7”. Sims posted a mark of 38’4” in the triple jump for first place and Portia Collins followed with a mark of 34-2.75” for a-sixth place finish. Michelle Zorn threw the shot 40’3.25” for first-place.

Southern Miss will compete in its last meet, May 3 in the LSU Twilight Invitational, before heading to the Conference USA Outdoor Championship, May 14-17.
