Golden Eagle Track and Field Teams Post Season-Best Performances
- The Southern Miss men's and women's outdoor track and field teams posted season-best performances at the Jace Laoste Invitational in Starkville, Miss., finishing sixth and fourth, respectively.
For the Golden Eagles, Marcus Polk ran a season-best 21.55 in the 200 meters, finishing eight. Tavius Freeman posted an eighth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.25. The 4x400-meter relay team recorded a season-best time of 3:17.34 to finish seventh.
Michael Hardrick took second in the high jump with a jump of 6'8". Matt Fant finished fourth in the pole vault, at 15'0, while Michael Ludlow took eighth at 13'. Cedric Norman had a season-best jump in the long jump with a jump of 24'3.75" for second place. Polk finished fourth in the triple jump, jumping a season-best 44'5.25". Bryan Bruner finished second in the shot put with a toss of 53'11.25" and fourth in the discus with a throw of 150'0". Noah Bryant took second in the discus with personal- and season-best throw of 158'10" and took seventh in the hammer with a throw of 129'. Casey McGehee finished seventh in the discus with a season-best throw of 137'11". Eric Lyon topped the day with a new school record in the hammer with a throw of 135'6", finishing fifth.
The Golden Eagles finished the meet with 66 points behind Mississippi State with 159 1/2 points, Southwest Missouri State 119, Memphis 113, Southeast Missour State 86, Ole Miss 85. Louisiana Tech had 45 and Rhodes College had 5 1/2.
On the women's side, the Lady Eagles posted winners in five events that included Prudence Reid's season-best performance in the 100 meters, taking first-place with a time of 11.70. Yolanda Johnson finished eighth in the 200 meters, posting a season-best 24.80.
The Lady Eagles finished 1-2-3 in the 800 meters with Janet Rono taking first with a season-best time of 2:13.15, followed by Jessica Crump at 2:13.88 and Oby Amadi third at 2:14.36. All three had season- and personal-best marks.
In the field events, Kate Juedes and Sabrina Norwood finished 1-2 in the high jump, with Juedes edging out teammate Norwood on fewer misses, finishing the meet jumping 5'6". Krista Miller took sixth with a jump of 5'4". Sandra Allen posted a season-best jump in the long jump, taking first with a jump of 19'1.25". Tamara Dayes posted three top-five finishes in her events. She took third in the shot put with a throw of 45'5", fifth in the discus with a throw of 136'8" and set a new school record and personal-best throw of 160'2" in the hammer. Emilie Taylor had a season-best throw of 126'11" in the javelin, finishing third, while Kristen Preau took sixth with a toss of 110'11".
The Lady Eagles finished fourth with 106 points behind Southwest Missouri State with 119 points, Southeast Missouri State with 108, Ole Miss 107 1/2. Mississippi State was fifth with 105 1/2 points followed by Louisiana Tech with 88, Memphis 37, Rhodes College 24 and Alabama-Huntsville 21.
Southern Miss will host its second meet of the season with the April 20 USM Invitational.
