Golden Eagle Track and Field Teams Post Improved Marks at the Tulane Invitational


HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's and women's outdoor track and field teams posted improved marks at the Tulane Invitational over the weekend and broke one school record.

Junior Janet Rono took first place in the 800 with a time of 2:13.67 for a season-best and 5,000 meters, setting a new school record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:51.23. Prudence Reid finished second in the 100 meters (12.02) and third in the 200 meters (24.53). Yolanda Johnson was seventh in the 200 with a time of 25.49. Oby Amadi took fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:16.18, posting a season-best. Jessica Crump was fourth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:47.64. Keri White finished fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 19:04.47.

In the field events, Krista Miller took first place in the high jump with a season and personal best, 5'7", edging out teammate Sabrina Norwood, who finished third in the high jump with a season-best jump of 5'7", while teammate Kate Juedes finished fifth with a jump of 5'5". Tamara Dayes was third in the shot put and discus with throws of 42'6.75" and 144'7", respectively. Michelle Zorn finished eighth in the shot with a toss of 40'6".

In the relays, the Lady Eagles finished third in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 46.86, and took third in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:53.32.

On the men's side, Cedric Norman posted a double win, finishing first in the high jump (6'8.75") and long jump (24'3"). Bryan Bruner took top honors in the shot put with a toss of 53'7" and finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 152'4". Marcus Polk ran a season-best 10.95 in the 100 meters, finishing third and followed that with a fourth-place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 21.99. Polk also finished fifth in the long jump with a jump of 22'7.25". Stevenson McKinney finished sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.29, followed by Marvin Williams with a time of 50.48, finishing seventh. Tavius Freeman finished second in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.23.

Michael Hardrick took second in the high jump with a jump of 6'6.75". Matt Fant posted a season-best jump in the pole vault with a jump of 15'5.75", finishing third. Marvin Lucas was fourth in the long jump with a jump of 23'1.75". Noah Bryant took third in the discus with a throw of 153'3", Casey McGehee was seventh with a throw of 136'8". Eric Lyon was eighth in the shot with a toss of 43'9".

Southern Miss travels to Starkville for the Mississippi State Invitational, April 13.
