Golden Eagle Mens Team Finish Third at Bulldog Invitational; Women Place Fourth
STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Golden Eagle mens team claimed titles in the high jump and second in the long jump and javelin Saturday, earning a third-place finish at the Bulldog Invitational with 80.50 points, while the Lady Eagles took the long jump competition and a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles, helping Southern Miss finish fourth with 82 points.
The Golden Eagles performances were highlighted by senior Cedric Normans 70.50 performance in the high jump, capturing his third high jump title. The Golden Eagles took three of the top four places in the javelin, led by Conrad Chanove performance of 2015 for second-place, followed Jeb Meschke with a throw of 2002 and Marvin Lucas fourth with a throw of 1967. Marvin Lucas finished second in the long jump with a jump of 249.25. Norman and Marcus Lucas finished fifth and sixth, respectively, with jumps of 236 and 234. Jeff Danso finished third in the triple jump with a jump of 480, his season-best. Robert Pittman scored points in the pole vault, finishing eighth with a height of 131.50. Maulies Pettaway finished seventh in the shot put with a throw of 4811.50, rounding out the field events.
Shane Brandford placed sixth in the 100 meters with a time of 10.52. C. J. Collier finished third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.64 and followed that performance with a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.60. The 4x100-meter relay team finished fourth with a time of 40.69, completing the scoring for the Golden Eagles.
On the women's side, Tanika Liburd finished first in the long jump with a jump of 1911, her second consecutive top finish in the long jump. Krista Miller finished eighth in the high jump with a height of 53. Shannon Weaver finished third in the long jump with a jump of 188 and Sharlynn Monroe finished seventh with a jump of 181.
Angela Johnson finished sixth and Liburd finished eighth in the 100 meters with times of 11.96 and 12.04, respectively. Johnson followed with a third-place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 24.87 and Tori Wells was fourth with a time of 24.90. Weaver scored points in the 400 meters, finishing sixth with a time of 1:00.44 and Adriane Battle was seventh with a time of 1:00.75. Alisha Edwards took seventh-place in the 800 meters with a time of 2:17.02. Naomi Kiptrotich was seventh in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:57.02. Becca Wiseman finished fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:21.57. Raquel Washington finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.99 and Jocelyn Young finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.10. The 4x100-meter relay team finished third with a time of 46.38 and the 4x400-meter relay team finished fourth with a time of 3:52.60, while the B-team finished sixth with a time of 4:15.86.
Miss. State won the men's event with points 178 points, while Southwest Missouri State claimed the women's title with 180 points.
Southern Miss competes in the Crimson Classic on April 3, in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
