Golden Eagles Turn In Solid Performances at Middle Tennessee Classic
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The Southern Miss men’s and women’s indoor track teams turned in solid performances while competing at the Middle Tennessee State Invitational, Saturday, Feb. 15. The meet is the last before the teams head to the Conference USA championship, Feb. 29-Mar. 1.

Angela Johnson finished second in the 55 meters with a time of 7.25 and Joanna Williams was fifth with a time of 7.39. Johnson followed that performance with a sixth-place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 25.26 a season-best. Kasey House was seventh in the 200 with a season-best time of 25.41. Karen Tankersley took third in the one-mile run with a time of 5:23.23 and Lydiah Chepkwony was eighth with a time of 5:47.40. The 4x400 meter relay team finished second with a time of 3:58.13.

In the field events, Kate Juedes finished first in the high jump with a height of 5’6”, Sabrina Norwood and Krista Miller finished tied for second with a height of 5’4”. Regina Ballinger took first in the pole vault with a height of 9’6”. Angela Johnson finished third in the long jump with a jump of 18’4.50” and Shannon Weaver finished seventh with a jump of 17’7.25”. Michelle Zorn finished third in the shot put with a throw of 41’6”.

Shane Brandford finished second in the 55 meters with a time of 6.41. Marcus Polk turned a time of 21.97 in the 200 meters, finishing seventh. Kenny Johnson finished eighth in the 400 meters with a time of 49.87. Matthew Cheruiyot was the top finisher in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:47.25.

In field events, the Golden Eagles had several performers finish in the top five. Cedric Norman finished first in the high jump with a jump of 6’8” and Steve Griffin took fourth with a jump of 6’0”. Matt Fant was first in the pole vault with a height of 15’0”. Marvin Lucas turned a 23’8.25” performance in the long jump, finishing second. Norman finished fifth in the with a height of 23’3.50”. Noah Bryant finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 43’10”. Eric Lyon finished second in the weight throw with a toss of 46’4.50”, Bryant was fifth at 44’1.50” and Casey McGehee finished tied for sixth with a throw of 41’4”.

Both teams will compete in the Conference USA Indoor Championship, Feb. 28-Mar. 1 in Houston, Texas.
