Southern Miss Opens Indoor Season at LSU Purple Tiger Invitational With Solid Performances
Cedric Norman picked up where he left off last season, capturing a first-place finish in the high jump competition
Marvin Lucas posted a provisionally qualifying mark in the long jump
BATON ROUGE, La. -
The Southern Miss men’s and women’s indoor track teams got the 2004 season off to an outstanding start, provisionally qualifying two athletes at the LSU Purple Tiger Indoor Track and Field Invitational on Saturday at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse on the campus of LSU.
Cedric Norman picked up where he left off last season, capturing the high jump competition with a provisionally qualifying mark of 7’2.50". Marvin Lucas finished third in the men’s long jump championship with a jump of 24’11", also a provisionally qualifying mark. Noah Bryant posted a personal-best throw of 48’10" in the weight throw, finishing seventh. Newcomers Jeff Danso finished fifth in the triple jump with a jump of 47’7" and C.J. Collier finished ninth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.43, after qualifying round with a time of 8.37. Durran Dunn ran a time of 51.83 in the 400 meters.
Newcomers Tori Wells and Raquel Washington finished in the top nine in 60-meter dash with times of 7.80 and 7.88, respectively. Alisha Edwards posted a time of 2:28.27 in the 800 meters, finishing fifth. Lydiah Chepkwony finished sixth in the one-mile run with a time of 5:28.30, while Cassandra Goodson finished seventh in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:43.84. Washington also finished fourth in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, posting a time of 8.70. She ran a better time in the preliminaries, 8.78. Shannon Weaver finished seventh in the long jump with a jump of 17’7". Lexi Washington was eighth in the triple jump with a jump of 36’11.50". Krista Miller and Kate Juedes finished in a tie for third in the jump with a height of 5’5.75" and Sabrina Norwood finished seventh at 5’3.75". Dasha Wakefield rounded out the performers with a height of 10' in the pole vault, finishing eighth.
The women’s distance medley relay team finished seventh with a time of 13:09.18.
Following the LSU Purple Tiger meet, Southern Miss will return to Baton Rouge, La., for the LSU Bayou Bengal Invitational, Jan. 30.
