Southern Miss Indoor Track Teams Gearing Up for Upcoming Season
The Southern Miss men’s and women’s indoor track teams open their season at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational, Jan. 25, in the LSU Fieldhouse.
Following a two-year absence, the men’s indoor team was re-instated and will compete this season with high expectations.
“We are expecting good things with our men’s team,” Head Coach Wayne Williams said. “The past two seasons, we have continued to compete indoor even though we couldn’t compete at our conference meet. Now, our kids have a purpose for competing. We are very excited about our upcoming season.”
The Golden Eagles have used the indoor season as part of their training for outdoor season the past two years. Southern Miss returns its top performers in field events, long jumper Marvin Lucas, high jumper Cedric Norman and discus thrower Noah Bryant. Lucas set a school record in the indoor long jump, posting a provisional qualifying mark. Norman also set a school record in the high jump and posted the first 7’0 height in the high jump since the 1993 season. Top returning sprinters include Kenny Johnson, Shane Brandford, and Marcus Polk.
The women’s indoor team finished ninth at the Conference USA Championship last season and return 14 letterwinners this year. Leading the group of returnees are sprinter Prudence Reid, who finished second in the 60-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meters at the C-USA championship, and Jessica Crump, who finished second in the 800 meters at the C-USA championship.
“We are expecting good things from Prudence and Jessica,” Williams said. “We are excited about the people we have returning along with the newcomers. Some of the freshmen will get their first experience at an indoor meet, and we are anixous to see how they will perform.”
