Southern Miss Opens Indoor Season at LSU Purple Tiger
Head Coach Wayne Williams is entering his seventh season
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
The Southern Miss men's and women's indoor track teams open the 2004 season at the LSU Purple Tiger Indoor Track and Field Invitational on Saturday at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse on the campus of LSU.
"We had good fall workouts," Head Coach Wayne Williams said. "We have a lot of people who I am anxious to see in competition. We had some athletes make a lot of progress from last season. We also have a number of newcomers who we are excited about seeing in competition. It seems like its been a long time getting here, but we are looking forward to the season."
The Golden Eagles return 15 letterwinners from last year's team that finished seventh at the Conference USA indoor championship. Heading that list of returnees is senior high jumper Cedric Norman, who won the high jump at the C-USA meet last year. Norman won all four competitions he competed in and that outstanding performance carried over to the outdoor season as well. Norman posted four, first-place finishes in the high jump. Also returning are field event performers Marcus Polk, Noah Bryant, Eric Lyon and sprinter Marcus Polk and Shane Brandford.
Williams has added nine newcomers including Corwyn Collier of Bedford Heights, Ohio, Robert Johnson of Gulfport, Miss., Greg Lawrence of Pascagoula, Miss., Maulies Pettaway of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Robert Pittman of Raymond, Miss., Logan Stogner of Angie, La., Jeff Danso of Toronto, Canada, Bobby Weakly of Brandon, Miss., and Antrell Young of Tylertown, Miss.
On the Lady Eagle side, Williams returns a veteran squad of 21 letterwinners and made improvements over the 2002 season. Even though the top sprinter and middle distance runners are gone, Williams still returns a solid group of sprinters in Kasey House, Angela Johnson, Candi Johnson and Shannon Weaver. Seniors Keri White and Lydiah Chepkwony also return. Williams added strength and depth with the addition of Adriane Battle of Elk Grove, Calif., Trinity McKinney of Tupelo, Miss., and Tori Wells of Port Allen, La.
The middle distance and distance runners added several performers, including Cassandra Goodson of Concord, Calif., Becca Wiseman of Phoenix, Ariz., and Naomi Kiprotech of Eldoret, Kenya.
The field event squad returns its top scorers in Kate Juedes, Krista Miller and Shannon Weaver. The Lady Eagles will get a boost from newcomers Sharlynn Monroe of Bay City, Texas, Ashley Reyer of Petal, Miss., Lexi Washington of Natchez, Miss., and Raquel Washington of Gulfport, Miss.
Following the LSU Purple Tiger meet, Southern Miss will return to Baton Rouge, La., for the LSU Bayou Bengal Invitational, Jan. 30.
