HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Six first-place finishes and two more best marks among collegiate participants highlighted the USM Invitational here Saturday for the Golden Eagles at the Marshall Bell Complex.
On the women's side, Cheris Fletcher captured the 400 meters with a 55.29, finishing just ahead of teammates Carmen Dennis (56.40) and Terria Wheeler (57.47) in second and third place, respectively.
Ashley May captured the triple jump event with a best mark of 12.29 meters, while also posting the best long jump mark among the collegiate participants at 5.97 meters. The only better jump came from former Lady Eagle Tanika Liburd, who tallied a 6.44 meter leap. In the triple jump, May led three Southern Miss finishers at the top as Simona Costache tallied second (11.71m) and Myra Hawkins placed third (11.46m).
Suesanna Williams posted the best hammer throw toss at 53.67 meters, to win that event, while Hana Prudilova captured the best javelin throw of 45.70 meters. Jessica Bussey tallied second in the javelin at 41.48 meters.
The Lady Eagles also won the 4x400 relay with a time of 3.53.24.
For the men, Ricardo Page won the shot put with a best throw of 16.55 meters, while also finishing third in the discus (48.45m).
Noah Slater had the best javelin throw among the collegians at 61.59, behind the unattached Justin Cummins, who threw for a 71.76 meters.
Southern Miss returns to action next Friday when they host its second track meet of the spring season at the Marshall Bell Track Complex.
