The Southern Miss men's and women's track and field teams turned in solid performances at their only home meet of the season Saturday.
Edward Pearce finished sixth overall in the 100 meters with a time of 10.84. Cornelius Duncan ran a season-best time of 47.18 in the 400 meter dash, posting a regional qualifying time and a first-place finish. Cordell Kinn finished fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 48.94. Marvin Pinnock was second in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.37 and Brandon McCray was fourth with a time of 1:57.59. Frederick Baldwin finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.74 and followed with a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.01. Teammate Quincy Parker was the top finisher in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.61. Will Garrett finished first in the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 10:12.16.
The 4x100-meter relay team finished fifth with a time of 42.55 and the 4x400-meter relay team finished second with a time of 3;16.22.
Ahmed Abdelzaher was first in the high jump, clearing a height of 6'8", out-dueling his teammate, Steven Green, who also jumped 6'8" to finish second. Leonard McLeggon finished sixth with a jump of 6'4" and David Clyburn rounded out the team with a jump of 6'2", finishing in a tie for seventh. Robert Johnson finished third in the long jump with a jump of 23'2.75". Ken Watson was third in the triple jump with a jump of 47'11". Noah Bryant finished second in the discus with a throw of 153'2" and Marcus Brown was fifth with a throw of 146'1". Brown was finished first in the hammer with a throw of 173'3". Conrad Chanove won the javelin with a throw of 198'10".
On the women's side, Tanika Liburd won the 100 meters with a time of 11.44 with teammates Angela Johnson finishing third with a time of 11.57 and Tori Wells eight with a time of 11.89. Wells recorded the team's best time in the 200 meters at 24.60, finishing sixth overall and Angela Johnson ran a 24.62 to finish eighth. Newcomers Terria Owens finished fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 58.38, while Cheris Fletcher finished third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:20.99. Senior Alisha Edwards finished seventh in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:05.56. Ronna Sandoval ran 19:02.71 in the 5,000 meters and finished second. Ashley Reyer finished first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.22. Jocelyn Young was third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.20 and Kenika Weaver was fifth with a time of 1:04.67.
The 4x100-meter relay team recorded a regional qualifying time of 45.65, finishing first. The 4x400-meter team finished second with a time of 3:47.47.
In field events, Reyer finished third in the high jump with a height of 5'5". Liburd posted a regional qualifying mark in the long jump with a jump of 20'5" and Angela Johnson was second with a jump of 19'0.50". Rounding out the other Southern Miss finishers was Reyer at fourth with a jump of 18'6.50" and Erica Alston fifth with a jump of 18'6". Freshman Simona Costache was the top finisher in the triple jump with a jump of 43'1", posting a regional qualifying mark. Aaliyah Shareef was third with a jump of 38'6.25". Suesanna Williams was fifth in the shot put with a throw of 40'.0.75". Hana Prudilova finished eighth in the hammer with a throw of 107'6". She finished second in the javelin, recording a regional qualifying mark of 148'3". Williams finished seventh with a throw of 116'3".
Southern Miss returns to action, competing in the Alabama Relays, March 18-19.
