The Southern Miss men's and women's indoor track and field teams turned in several solid performance at the Houston Indoor Invitational on Saturday.
Newcomer Ahmed Abdelzaher won the men's high jump with a height of 6'11.75", while teammate Marcus Brown was the top collegiate in the weight throw with a distance of 62'6.75", finishing second to an unattached performer and setting a school record. Cornelius Duncan finished fourth in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 49.57. Marvin Pinnock was seventh in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.62. Ken Watson finished eighth in the triple jump with a jump of 46'10". The 4x400-meter relay team finished eighth with a time of 3:22.15.
Lady Eagle newcomer Simona Costache took the top spot in the triple jump with a jump of 42'2", while teammate Aaliyah Shareef was third with a jump of 40'. Raquel Washington turned in an outstanding performance in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing second with a personal, school record and provisional qualifying time of 8.17, just missing the NCAA automatic qualifying time of 8.15.
Angela Johnson finished fourth in the 200 meters with a season best time of 25.01. Naomi Kiprotich finished fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:19.53, and then followed that with a third-place finish in the one-mile run with a time of 5:06.63, both season bests. Brittany Wood was fifth in the one-mile run with a season best time of 5:07.44. The 4x400-meter relay team finished ninth with a time of 3:57.00.
Ashley Reyer placed third in the women's indoor pentathlon, scoring 3,684 points, only 17 points shy of an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
Both teams will be in action at the LSU Twilight Invitational, Feb. 17.
