HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss collected a pair of first-place finishes and placed in the top 10 in 16 different events as the Golden Eagles opened their Indoor Track and Field season at the Purple Tiger Indoor meet in Baton Rouge, La., Saturday.

Ashley May won the women's long jump championship with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 6.24 meters, while Parris Hodges won the women's 3000 meter run with a time of 11:16.06.

The Lady Eagles also garnered a couple of second-place finishes as Jemarie Alcordo put together a time of 5:31.00 in the one mile run, while Cheris Fletcher notched a 58.67 in the 400 meter dash.

The Golden Eagle men got a pair of third-place ties with Cordell Kim notching a time of 51.24 in the 400 meter dash and Cornelius Duncan posted a 49.65 in the 400 meter run championship.

Ronna Sandoval registered a fourth-place in the women's 400 meter dash with a time of 11:58.59, as the tandem of Fletcher, Carmen Dennis, Kirsten Richards and Teria Wheeler placed fourth in the women's 4x400 relay with a 3:55.68. Richards also placed fifth in the 400 meter dash with a 1:01.34, while Dennis notched a 2:33.98 for eighth in the women's 800 meters.

Lady Eagle Suesanna Williams collected a pair of sixth-place showings in the weight throw (16.19 meters) and shot put (12.78 meters), while Rushae Collier ended the day in ninth in the women's weight throw at 14.70 meters.

Southern Miss added three more fifth-place finishes as Ashley May ended in fifth in the women's one mile run championship with a 5:49.13, as Tiffany Hubbard's tallied a distance of 1.62 meters in the women's high jump and Ricardo Page added a throw of 15.60 meters in the men's shot put. Aaron Ammons also placed seventh in the men's shot put with a distance of 15.32 meters.

Myreon Sartin ranked eighth in the men's high jump with a leap of 1.93 meters, while Kelley Rooney notched a ninth-place showing in the women's one mile run championship with a time of 5:49.13. Rascieve Grant also tallied ninth in the men's 200 meter dash with a 22.96.

The Southern Miss indoor season continues with the Florida Invitational in Gainesville next Saturday (Jan. 26).
