IRVING, Texas - Southern Miss and Tulsa earned C-USA Athlete of the Week honors this week. Senior Paulo Alvarado of Southern Miss was named the Conference USA Male Athlete of the Week for the first time this year with three singles wins.
Alvarado finished the week with a 3-0 record at No. 1 singles for the Golden Eagles. Alvarado fought back from a set down to defeat Dor Amir of Northern Illinois in clinching the match point in leading the team past the Huskies (4-3). He followed with a straight set win over No. 27 Alex Fennell of Penn State to snap Fennell's 10-match winning streak and record the Golden Eagles' only point in the match. Alvarado closed out the week with a three-set win over Florida A&M's Admire Mushonga, 5-7, 6-3, 10-5. In doubles competition, Alvarado and Juan Escobar met No. 45 Leonard Stakhovsky and Russell Bader of Penn State. Alvarado was serving for the match at 7-6 before it was called because the Nittany Lions had clinched the doubles point. Alvarado and Escobar's match against Florida A&M was also called with the duo leading 6-5 because the Golden Eagles had already clinched the doubles point. This is Alvarado's first Athlete of the Week honor this season.
