Men's Tennis Face Ole Miss in Season Opener
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men’s tennis team travels north to Oxford to open its 2018 spring season Saturday morning.
The Golden Eagles are set to face the Ole Miss Rebels at 11 a.m. at the Gillom Sports Center, which features three indoor courts. Saturday’s match is the season opener for both schools.
Scouting Ole Miss:
The Rebels feature four players ranked in the top 125 singles players in the country. Tim Sandkaulen holds the highest ranking at No. 14, Gustav Hansson at No. 32, Zvonimir Babic at No. 69 and Filip Kraljevic at No. 86. Babic and Kraljevic are also ranked as the No. 20 doubles pair in the country.
The Golden Eagles will also face Finn Reynolds, a New Zealand National Champion, who recently joined the Rebels.
Southern Miss vs. Ole Miss:
The Golden Eagles are looking for its first win in nine tries against the Rebels. The first match between the two sides was in ’97 where No. 6 Ole Miss won 5-2.
Highlighting the Golden Eagles:
Zubin Engineer enters his fifth season with the Golden Eagles featuring five new faces from India, Indonesia Poland, Switzerland and Taiwan. Mikhail Esipov headlined the fall season for Southern Miss winning the CCB Collegiate Invitational and the Battle on the Bayou Invitational.
After a 21-5 season, the most wins under Engineer in a season, Jorman Reyes finished his sophomore campaign with a 22-2 record but sat out this spring due to injury. The now junior holds two records for the longest win streak, 11, which he did twice.
The Golden Eagles return home next weekend, Jan. 26 and Jan. 27 for three home matches. Southern Miss hosts Florida A&M on Friday at 2 p.m, Jackson State on Saturday at 10 a.m. and Alcorn State at 2 p.m.
