NEW ORLEANS, La. - Three Golden Eagle tennis players battled in the finals of Big Easy Tennis Classic on Sunday and captured at least one title.
In doubles competition, Vasco Valverde and Brad Marriott downed Michael binder and Timo Kranz of Uno, 8-7, in advancing to the semi-finals. Paulo Alvarado and Juan Escobar defeated Romain Leferve and Timo Mooij of UNO, 8-4, only to meet teammates Valverde and Marriott in the semifinals. Alvarado and Escobar advanced to the finals with a walkover. The duo eventually fell to Sami Ghorbel and Mansingh Athare of Troy, 8-6.
In the singles, Valverde advanced through the men's flight 1 with a wins over Blake Gregor of UNO, 7-5, 6-2 and Sami Ghorbel of Troy in a three-setter, 6-2, 3-6, 10-8. Valverde lost in the championship match to Rui Silva of UNO, 6-2, 3-6, 8-2 retired.
In Flight 2 singles, Escobar defeated Mansingh Athare of Troy in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 only to face teammate Brad Marriott in the championship match. Marriott defeated Ronald Mataba of Alabama State, 6-1, 7-6. Escobar won the match by walkover.
