WACO, Texas - The Southern Miss men's tennis team claimed 11 victories in the opening day of the HEB Baylor Intercollegiate as a trio of Golden Eagles advanced to the round of 16 in the singles.
Junior Paulo Alvarado posted wins over Sebastian Job of UTPA, 6-1, 6-1 and Taylor Patrick of Tennessee, 7-6 (9), 5-7, 6-4. Sophomore Matt Frost topped Boburjon Kamiljanov of UTSA, 6-2, 6-1 and Calo Gomez of Laredo Community College, 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Vasco Valverde made his collegiate debut posting wins over Coleman Wahlborg of Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-2, 6-2, and Edward Jones of Tennessee, 6-1, 6-0.
Sophomore Andrew Goodwin won his opening match against Jarred Wynan of Louisiana-Lafayette, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2, before losing to Trpimir Kulundzic of Virginia Tech, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Junior Juan Escobar fell to Marko Krickovic of Baylor, 6-2, 6-1 in his opening match. Sophomore Inaki Belloso lost to Filip Dzanko of DePaul 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 while sophomore Brad Marriott dropped his first match to Adam Gustafsson of Rice, 6-2, 6-3. Belloso recorded a win in the consolation round against Alex Inante of Laredo Community College, 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, Escobar-Brad Marriott defeated Joel Rubio-Boburjon Kamiljanov of UTSA, 8-5, but fell to Taylor Patrick-Brandon Fickey of Tennessee, 8-6. Frost-Goodwin picked up a doubles win against Hunter Goertz-Coleman Wahlborg of Louisiana-Lafayette, 8-3, then, lost to Abid Akbar-Marius Cristea of Idaho 8-3. Alvarado-Valverde downed Adam Gustafsson-Phillip Seifert of Rice, 8-4, before losing to No. 2 seed Julian Lenz-Mate Zsiga of Baylor, 8-4.
All the Golden Eagles are back in action Saturday.
