Men's Tennis Team Outlasts Old Dominion 4-3

TULSA, Okla.--Senior Alex Doleac battled back for a set down in helping to clinch a 4-3 victory as Southern Miss defeated Old Dominion in the opening day of the Conference USA Tennis Championship at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Doleac dropped his first set 6-4 to Dante Terenzio before taking the final two sets in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (7). Southern Miss picked its first tournament since 2009.
At No. 2 doubles, Vasco Valverde and Chao-Yu Huang took the first match 8-2 against Zvonimir Podvinski and Keon Wiggemans. The Monarchs answered at No. 3 doubles where Carlos Lopez Villa and Abdoulaye Camara outlasted Doleac and Grigory Trotsenko 8-6. The first point of the match came down to court one where Jonas Kuwert and Dante Terenzio defeated Paulo Alvarado and Juan Escobar 8-5.
In singles, ODU took a 2-0 lead as No. 61 ranked Carlos Lopez Villa defeated Alvarado 6-2, 6-0. Huang put the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard by beating Kuwert 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4. Trotsenko evened the match at 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Camara at No. 6. Escobar pulled the Golden Eagles ahead 3-2 by beating Wiggemans 7-6 (1), 6-1 at No. 5.
ODU answered when Podvinski defeated Valverde 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 at the three-spot to tie the score at 3-3. Doleac sealed the win over the Monarchs with a 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (7) over Terenzio.
Southern Miss will face the top seed Tulsa at 2 p.m.
