Results

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Southern Miss rallied to post three-set victories in three singles matches and used the doubles point to defeat No. 70 East Carolina 5-2 in second day action of the Conference USA Shootout Saturday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.

The loss snapped the Pirates' 12-match win streak and dropped ECU to 16-2. The win improved the Golden Eagles to 9-7 and snapped a four-match losing streak.

Southern Miss captured four of six singles events, but Patricio Alvarado's 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Jaroslav Horvath at No. 1, Diego Machuca's 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over Henrik Skalmerud at No. 4 and Oscar Machuca's 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 decision over Brian Oakley in a No. 6 matchup sparked the Golden Eagles' singles success and eventual match win. Domagoj Anic also added to the score, posting a 6-4, 6-3 win over Denis Ermilov at No. 3.

Alvarado ran his overall record to 25-7, including 13-3 in dual match play and 3-0 in C-USA play. This is the third nationally ranked team the Golden Eagles have defeated this spring.

Southern Miss opened play by earning the doubles point after victories by tandems Jan Burmeister/Strate Krstevski (8-4 over Aleksey Kochetov/Skalmerud), Domagoj Anic/D. Machuca (8-7 over Oakley/Stephen Whitwell) and Alvarado/Markus Wessinghage (9-7 over Denis Ermilov/Horvath).

East Carolina booked its pair of points when Whitwell defeated Andrew Poole 6-1, 7-6 in a No. 2 meeting and Kochetov outlasted Krstevski 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 5

The Golden will close out C-USA Shootout action Sunday when they face UAB beginning at 9 a.m.
