Men's Tennis Falls to No. 67 UAB, 5-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team fell to No. 67 UAB , 5-2, in the Conference USA Shootout on Sunday at the UAB Tennis Courts.

"We came out to play today," Coach Ki Kroll said. "We fought hard against UAB. I'm especially happy with play of Paulo Alvarado who beat a very good player at the number two position. He continues to grow as a player. Andrew Goodwin was exceptionally good at number 6 winning our first point. Overall, I was happy with our performance as a team."

UAB opened the match by sweeping the doubles to earn the 1-0 lead. UAB's Chris Helliar and Lucas Dirube downed Andrew Goodwin and Jovan Zeljkovic 8-4 on court three followed by an 8-5 win on court one to clinch the point when David Zimmerman and Tom Puetz defeated Inaki Belloso and Juan Escobar. Paulo Alvarado and Michael Elortegui battled on court two, but came up short to Danny Manlow and Daniel Moser, 8-7 (2).

The Golden Eagles evened the match at 1-1 when Goodwin posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Puetz in the No. 6 spot. The Blazers then won the next four matches in sealing the win. Helliar down Belloso in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 followed by a Dirube win at no. 5 against Zeljkovic 7-5, 5-2. Moser clinched the match point on court four in a three-setter against Escobar, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Matt Frost battled Manlow on court one, but eventually fell 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3. Alvarado recorded the Eagles' final point at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (2) win over Zimmerman.

Southern Miss returns home to host Middle Tennessee State at 1 p.m.
